Bachelor of Law (LLB)

It is a 4 years program, The Auckland Law School is ranked the best law school in New Zealand and one of the best law schools in the world. To become an LLB Part I (first-year) student you must first apply and be accepted into one other bachelors degree program for your non-law courses. Places in LLB Part II (second year) are limited, and all applicants must go through a selection process.

The degree is made up of 480 points, studied in four parts (Parts I–IV). It is a combination of compulsory law courses, elective law courses, non-law courses from another degree program and one General Education course. We offer a wide range of law elective courses, including Corporate and Commercial, Public, Criminal, International, Family, and Environmental Law.

LLB Honors

The LLB (Hons) degree is a highly regarded program for those students who maintain a B+ average throughout their law studies. The program’s focus is on quality research and culminates in writing a dissertation.

The LLB (Hons) is a total of 540 points and involves a student completing an additional 20-point honors seminar course as part of their Part III year and a 40-point dissertation in the semester immediately following their Part IV year. It usually takes nine semesters to complete all the requirements for the LLB (Hons) degree, unless a student is completing a conjoint degree, in which case it will usually take 11 semesters.

Master of Laws LL.M

The 1 year LL.M is designed to provide an advanced level of study for both full-time students and those who are legal practitioners or engaged in other full- or part-time employment. It can be undertaken by coursework, research or a combination of both. You can choose from over 25 taught courses and entry to the LL.M is available throughout the year. Students can concentrate your study in particular areas of specialization or study a broad range of legal subjects.

On the other hand, each course has a significant research component, usually in the form of a 12,500- word research essay for 30-point courses. The LL.M also permits cross-disciplinary study in the form of one or two master’s courses.

Master of Legal Studies (MLS)

This degree program has a similar structure to the Master of Laws and offers six specializations: Corporate and Commercial Law, Environmental Law, Human Rights Law, International Law, Litigation and Dispute Resolution, and Public Law.

The MLS allows cross-disciplinary study of postgraduate courses from other University of Auckland faculties, enabling you to advance your professional skills while acquiring knowledge of the law. The 120-point MLS option is available to professionals with a four-year degree. The 180-point MLS option is available to professionals with a three-year degree.
